Should we learn how to Speak Te Reo or No?

Dear Jacinda Ardern,

The prime minister of New Zealand I will humbly disagree your opinion that we should learn how to speak Te Reo. The reason why we shouldn't learn to speak te reo is because if we say something from their language we might say diffrent words that can make people sad or we say cuss words and they will think of us rude. Another reason why we shouldn't learn te reo Maori is because if we learn too much te reo. We might forget our country, or our identity and probally forget our parents (Maybe). To all the maori people I am truly sorry but I think we should learn te reo maori.

in conclusion, I think we shouldn't learn te reo maori.

  1. Mālō e lelei Tevini. Thanks for sharing your opinion in a respectful way. I disagree and think it's important to learn te reo Māori. But I do agree that we need to take care that we are not causing offence when speaking te reo Māori. That's why I try my hardest to learn the correct pronunciation. It will be interesting to see what other people think in the comments...

  2. Kia ora Tevini,
I hope you and your whānau are safe and well during lockdown. Thank you for sharing your whakaaro/thoughts on Te Reo Māori and it's place here in Aotearoa NZ. I also disagree, I believe that te reo is an important part of learning about our country and it's identity. I am also very proud of the amount of te reo that is now being used within mainstream media and education. Also as an example, one of the traditional meanings of the word 'māori' is normal, natural etc, so as a country I feel we are on the right path to the normalisation of the language.

  3. Malo e Lelei Tevini,

I agree with you but at the same time disagree. You got a great point there where you said that we might forget our own language or we might not even know our language properly and we are learning Te reo. So I am having mixed emotions. I think we should also learn because if someone need help we can help them out if they only speak Te reo.
I think we should never undergo our opportunity of learning a new language.

But I mostly agree with what you said.

I think all the Maori people out there have not taken any offense as you have said it in a very humble manner.

    Have a Awesome day.
    Asmah :)
